Upcountry

Looking to trade the sun-kissed shores for something a little more relaxing? Upcountry is for you, where the beaches give way to lush hills and towering mountains. The higher elevation means the climate is always on the cooler side – wake up to a fine layer of refreshing mist, and enjoy the verdant plant life across the region while the mountain of Haleakala – a long-dormant volcano visible from almost anywhere on island – towers above. Upcountry Maui itself has a few notable locations. There’s Kula, known for its famous farms and botanical garden. It’s where most of the local produce is grown, and offers some particularly expansive views overlooking the entirety of Maui. Kula is also renowned for its quiet, quaint residential neighborhoods: Kula 200, Omaopio Ridge, and the Ridge at Kulamanu. Kula offers a relaxing and refreshing contrast to the nonstop beaches and resorts of the rest of Maui. There’s also Makawao, a rustic town that used to be the place to find paniolo, or Hawaiian cowboys. This culture still permeates around the area, shown in everything from the ranches that line the roads to the unique shops on the famous Makawao Avenue. Makawao has several large neighborhoods that truly do capture this charming feeling, such as residential areas across the region of Olinda, along with the expansive Makawao Ranch Acres and Maui Uplands. Upcountry Maui is the perfect complement to the rest of the island, a refreshing oasis in paradise, and a truly special place.
